Astronomer Royal Telescopes project

A wonderful Scottish tradition is the operation of a network of residential outdoor centres. The majority of Scottish children - thousands per year - spend a week at such a centre at around age 9-12, building their independence, getting exposed to nature, and taking part in sporting activities. Our vision is to add night-time stargazing to this mix - introducing school pupils to the wonders of the night sky, and encouraging an interest in Science and Technology at a crucial development stage.
It is not plausible to send a team of astronomers to all these events. Instead, we plan to supply easy-to-use telescopes and staff training. We have started a pilot project using an STFC grant, testing equipment options, trialling installation and training at two outdoor centres, and scoping and costing long term options. We don't yet know accurate costs, but it is clear that to roll this concept out across Scotland on a sustainable basis will need extensive hardware purchases, and a continuing programme of support. We suspect that we may need something like £200K to establish a nationwide programme. |
