The Scottish Youth Telescope Network: Outdoor Education Under the Stars
Discover the Universe with Scotland’s Youth Telescope Network. This inclusive initiative instals state-of-the-art “smart” telescopes in remote outdoor education centres, visited by nearly all young Scots with their primary school. Through firsthand observations of distant galaxies and ancient stars, our program ignites curiosity and nurtures scientific skills. Support us as we open the skies and minds of Scotland’s future scientists, to foster a profound and lifelong passion for the cosmos.
The Scottish Youth Telescope Network is led by the Astronomer Royal for Scotland, Prof. Catherine Heymans, and the Regius Professor for Astronomy, Prof. Andy Lawrence. Our pilot, in collaboration with Edinburgh City Council, the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh, uses seedcorn funding from the UK Government Science and Technology Facilities Council, to assess a series of different smart scopes at participating centres. We are fundraising so we can extend the scheme across the whole country by 2026. We are grateful for every donation to the Royal Observatory Edinburgh Trust, to bring us closer to our goal of equipping every Scottish outdoor education centre with its own telescope. If you or your company are interested in making a lasting impact by naming and sponsoring a telescope, please get in touch. |
